Making Mental Rest a Priority

"Be still, and know that I am God!" — Psalm 46:10a (NLT)

When people express that they are busy, it is considered 'normal'. Many people live at a fast pace and in this fast-paced, always-connected world, mental fatigue has become a common ailment. It is often neglected until it creates a serious problem. In full disclosure, I've personally felt the toll of continuous mental strain, which led me to realize the importance of making mental rest a priority. I have learned how important mental rest is in my life and practical ways to incorporate it into my daily life. I want to share some things that I now keep at the front of my mind.

In Psalm 46:10, scripture says "Be still, and know that I am God." This verse is a powerful statement from God, emphasizing the importance of stillness and peace in our spiritual and mental life. It invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with God, which is essential for mental rest. One of my dear friends, Coach Jodi Meza, shared with me that "Be still" means to "Let go." How powerful is that! Moments of stillness allow us to clear our minds, reduce stress, and maintain our spiritual health.

When it comes to mental rest, here are some things to incorporate in our lives:

1) Recognize the Signs of Mental Fatigue

It’s crucial to recognize the early signs of mental fatigue, such as irritability, difficulty concentrating, or feeling overwhelmed. Acknowledging these signs can prompt us to take necessary actions to prevent burnout.

2) Schedule Regular Quiet Times

Just as we schedule meetings and social activities, it's important to schedule regular times for mental rest. This could involve short daily periods of meditation, prayer, or simply sitting quietly without distractions.

3) Create a Restful Environment

Your environment can significantly influence your ability to rest. Create a peaceful space in your home where you can retreat to relax and recharge. This might include a comfortable place to sit, soft lighting, or a place where you can enjoy the sunshine.

4) Disconnect to Reconnect

Regularly take time to disconnect from digital devices, which are often sources of mental clutter and stress. Instead, use this time to engage in activities that rejuvenate your mind, such as reading a book, journaling, or spending time outdoors.

I want you to think about:

  • What are the current sources of mental clutter in your life?

  • How can you incorporate regular periods of stillness into your daily routine?

  • What changes can you make to your environment to promote mental rest?

Here are some action steps you can take:

  • Identify one time each day when you can disconnect from all digital devices for at least 30 minutes.

  • Designate a specific spot in your home as your 'quiet space'—set it up this week to prepare for times of relaxation and mental rest.

Hop over to the Live Love Lead Community and share your experiences with mental rest. How do you make mental rest a priority? What tips and strategies have worked for you? Let’s support each other in our journey towards better mental health and spiritual well-being.

Dear God, give us the wisdom to recognize the importance of mental rest and the discipline to incorporate it into our daily lives. Help us to find peace in the stillness, strength in the quiet, and rejuvenation in Your presence. May we always remember to pause and be still, knowing that You are God.
