"Where there is no vision, the people perish." — Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
In a world filled with distractions and diverging paths, having a clear and purposeful vision for your family is necessary and transformative. Like a lighthouse guiding ships through stormy seas, a family vision rooted in Christ provides direction, unity, and meaning to your home. I want to unpack the significance of establishing a family vision that serves God and aligns with biblical principles.
"Where there is no vision, the people perish." — Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)
This proverb emphasizes the importance of having a guiding vision. For families, this vision is more than just a set of goals; it’s a framework that aligns your family’s daily actions with your values and spiritual beliefs.
Joshua 24:15b (ESV) - “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
For me, this verse helps to set a spiritual tone for my home. It’s about making a quality decision to prioritize God in all family decisions and interactions. Does this mean we get it right all the time? No! But, our heart posture is to get it right all the time.
Creating a family vision involves honest reflection, open communication, and prayerful consideration of what God has planned for your family. Here’s how to start:
1) Define Your Family Values
• ASK: What are the core values that you want your children and family members to demonstrate? How can these values be reflected in daily actions and decisions?
• ACTION: Hold a family meeting to discuss and define these values. Examples might include kindness, integrity, faithfulness, and service. Write these down and place them where everyone can frequently see them.
2) Establish a Spiritual Mission
• ASK: What is your family’s spiritual mission? How does your family demonstrate faith together?
• ACTION: Develop specific practices that foster spiritual growth in your home. This could include daily or weekly family devotions and times to pray together.
3) Plan to Serve God Together
• ASK: How can your family serve God in your community? What are ways you can collectively minister to others?
• ACTION: Choose a service project to participate in together, such as volunteering at a local shelter, supporting missionary work, or participating in community cleanup days. Make this a regular part of your family life to demonstrate the service aspect of your vision.
As you are taking intentional time to create your family vision, think about this:
1) What are three values you believe are crucial for your family to uphold?
2) How can your family grow together in faith this month?
3) What is one specific way your family can serve your community this season?
I encourage you to take time to write out your family vision statement. Discuss and refine it together so everyone knows their voice is important. Then take the necessary steps to start living out your family vision.
Dear God, bless our families with clarity, unity, and purpose. Help us craft a vision that honors you and guides our actions and decisions. May our homes be a reflection of your love and a source of your light in our communities. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
By establishing a clear, Christ-centered vision for your family, you set the stage for a purposeful and impactful family life that blesses your home and extends its influence to the community and beyond.
