You’re Doing Good: Embracing Grace in Life’s Challenges

" Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me." — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)

As I reflect on the last few weeks of my life, I can confidently say that life is a series of pitches—some we hit out of the park, and others catch us off guard, leaving us feeling like we’ve had the wind knocked out of us. It’s in these moments, when the curveballs hit hardest, that the simple act of pausing and telling ourselves, “You’re doing good,” can make all the difference. I am learning more and more about the importance of self-compassion, the necessity of self-love, and the journey back to our feet with God’s help after life knocks us down.

Life throws challenges that can disorient and overwhelm us—financial troubles, health issues, relationship conflicts, or career setbacks. These moments can shake our confidence and disturb our peace. I am thankful for the invitation from Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30, which reminds us that in moments when we feel overwhelmed, rest and recovery are encouraged and available.

As we navigate through life, it's important for us to express self-compassion. Self-compassion is recognizing when we are struggling and allowing ourselves the space to be human, to feel, and then to heal. It’s about showing ourselves the same kindness and patience we offer to others in their times of distress.

This is how I have shown myself self-compassion over the last few weeks.

1) Pausing and Reflecting

• When I felt the impact of a curveball, I gave myself permission to pause. I took a deep breath and assessed the situation. I allowed myself to feel the emotions without judgment. Pausing helps prevent reactive decisions and gives space for more thoughtful responses.

2) Showing Myself Grace

• I acknowledged that I'm doing my best with the circumstances at hand. I forgive myself for any perceived faults or mistakes. Grace fills the gaps between my expectations and my realities, resisting stress and opening the path to progress.

3) Embracing Self-Care

• I identified what I needed to recover. This meant setting boundaries, engaging in activities I love, and simply resting. Self-care is crucial for mental and physical health; it recharges my batteries and equips me to handle challenges more effectively.

4) Declaring My Worth

• I reminded myself daily of my worthiness. I spoke declarations that reinforced my identity and value in God’s eyes. Declarations help realign my self-image with the truth of what God says about my worth.

If you find yourself knocked down, know that getting back up is not just possible—it’s within your reach. Remember, resilience is built not in the absence of hardship but through navigating the struggles with faith and grace.

Dear God, in our weakest moments, remind us of Your unending strength. Help us to see ourselves as You see us—worthy, capable, and loved. Grant us the grace to accept our human limitations and the courage to rise again, stronger and more determined. In Jesus' name, AMEN.

In embracing the practice of telling ourselves that we’re doing good, we not only find the strength to get back up but also to move forward with renewed strength and in alignment with the purpose God has for each of us.
